'Rascal House' name may live on in new condos
The 'Rascal House' name may live on in a new high-rise set to replace the deli-style restaurant that's been an institution for a half century. But owners think residents will be more interested in gourmet food from an Epicure market on the ground floor.Owners of the Rascal House restaurant may preserve the famous name when the landmark is torn down to make way for an Epicure market and high-rise condos.
When the new 15-story building goes up, sometime after groundbreaking in June 2008, there may be a cafe named ''Rascal House'' in the market for old times' sake, said owner Jason Starkman. Whether you'll get the same kosher-style choices with free pickles and rolls remains to be seen.
''We don't know if it's going to be the same menu. These things are two or three years away and a lot of things can take different routes,'' Starkman said.
Rascal House is prominently featured in a book on the city's history, From Sandbar to Sophistication: The Story of Sunny Isles Beach, commissioned by the city to celebrate its 10th anniversary this year. It operated as Pumpernik's for the first year before the name permanently changed to Wolfie Cohen's Rascal House. The Starkman family bought it in 1996.
In any event, residents in the pricey condos -- the asking price is $625 per square foot -- won't go hungry. An Epicure market, known for its extensive collection of gourmet take-away meals, is planned at street-level downstairs.
